Now that the dust is settling after the elections, I once again remember that God is bigger than politics. We can’t look at a person’s political views and decide their standing with God by them, and we can’t judge the person because of them. The problem with our country isn’t politics but the wedge between people who think differently about governing our lives. It breaks my heart as I see people slaying each other with words instead of building each other up like the Bible says in 1. Thess. 5:11, “So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”

What does it say about our society that the most effective election ads were negative ones tearing the opponent apart instead of ads that actually laid out the candidate’s agenda and achievements? The more negativity guides our behavior, the worse we become! Giving in to this kind of advertising pours a new layer of darkness into our souls with horrifying consequences. When this attitude is multiplied with other similar messages, it grows into a darkness that governs our lives, making them selfish, unkind, jaded and flat out damaging.

We have to take a stand for what is good, right, and loving, and we need to live in the balance of standing for Truth and as Paul said in 1 Cor. 9:19-23,  “I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.” To me it simply means that we can’t let our political ideas govern our hearts, but Christ Himself has to be at the center. He is above politics. We desperately need to start seeing all people as God sees them, fallen but loved with a desperate need to find God, whether they deny it or not and regardless of their political stance. Everyone is on their own journey with God, and we need to respect that and bring Jesus to all people, regardless of their view on life. I believe that God is fully able to then deal with any issues they have, it’s not my job to fix them, but just point them to Him by living as an example and loving them. As you grasp this reality, you will be free to love everyone and you will find what it means to truly live!
